You hit send and instantly wish you hadn't. Not because of what you meant, but because of how it came out: one word sharper than you intended, and there is no taking it back. Or the opposite happens: you finally write the thing you have been putting off for weeks, and it turns out to take two lines.
It can look like this. A colleague you wrapped up a project with back in the summer messages you: "Quick question, do you remember that clause in the contract?" A friend whose conversation with you stopped mid-sentence a month ago replies to your old message as if there had been no gap at all. You open a draft email from September and realise it was never meant to go out then. It was meant to go out now.
Or like this. You explain the same thing three times and get understood three different ways. A delivery goes to the wrong address. The link in an important email opens last month's version of the document.
This is Mercury retrograde. Retrograde means a planet looks, from Earth, as if it is moving backwards. Mercury (thinking, words, agreements) does this from 24 October to 13 November 2026, moving back from 20°58′ to 5°02′ Scorpio.
The point in one line. Right now, words are more about the past than the future: finishing what was left unsaid matters more than starting something new.
What changes when Mercury goes backwards
In a birth chart, Mercury describes how you think, talk, write and make arrangements. The "backwards" part has a one-sentence explanation: Mercury is closer to the Sun and faster than Earth, so when it overtakes us on the inside track, from here it seems to slip back. The planet does not really turn around, but for us these three weeks work like a rewind.
Direct versus retrograde
When Mercury is direct, it moves conversations forward. When it is retrograde, it brings them back: old negotiations reopen, and someone from a month-old thread suddenly replies.
That is why new things struggle to get going in these weeks, while old things get finished well. A fresh project keeps tripping over details; a new contract keeps collecting edits. Meanwhile, the conversation you abandoned halfway suddenly comes together. The document that sat in your "later" folder for six months gets finished in one evening.
The shadow: longer than three weeks
Mercury turns back on 24 October and forward on 13 November, but it covers the stretch from 5°02′ to 20°58′ Scorpio three times. First going forward, from 4 to 24 October. Then backwards, from 24 October to 13 November. Then forward once more, from 13 to 30 November, until it is back at the point where it turned.
The stretches before and after are called the shadow. In practice it means something simple: whatever started in the first half of October comes back now for a second round, and the final answer tends to arrive towards the end of November. If you agreed on something in early October and it is now coming apart, that is not failure. It is part two.
How Mercury behaves in Scorpio itself, and why the unsaid is so loud and digging deeper feels so necessary, is covered in Mercury in Scorpio 2026. This article is only about the backward phase.
What comes up during Mercury retrograde
The unsaid. Things you meant to say earlier but never found the moment for. An apology that got stuck. The question you never asked your manager. A thank-you to someone you have not seen in a while. Scorpio makes this sharper: it is a sign that does not tolerate loose ends, and everything you once swallowed wants out.
Glitches in messages and paperwork. Read twice before you hit send. An email goes to the wrong person, a contract carries last year's date, a spreadsheet formula breaks, a call drops mid-sentence. Most of these are small, and almost all of them get caught on a second check.
Old contacts and colleagues come back, usually for work. Not necessarily personal. A former client remembers you, a previous employer asks if you are free, someone from university gets in touch with a question that could turn into a job. It is worth replying, even if you have not spoken in years.
Two days that run louder. On 30 October Mercury forms a right angle to Mars in Leo: words easily come out sharper than the thought behind them, and arguments flare over tone. Take a breath before you reply that day. On 4 November, the midpoint, Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun at 12°10′ Scorpio. This is usually when it becomes clear why everything resurfaced: the picture comes together, and you see what you actually wanted to say.
One more thing: Venus is also retrograde until 14 November. While both planets are moving backwards, it is not just your words under review but also what you value. More on that in Venus retrograde 2026.
The important part
Mercury retrograde does not break your words. It slows them down. Misunderstandings come from rushing far more often than from the retrograde itself.
You feel this most around the turning points. Near 24 October and near 13 November, Mercury barely moves: over three days it shifts by less than half a degree. On those days thoughts seem to spin their wheels, decisions will not settle, and the right words refuse to come. That does not mean something is wrong with you. It means this is a moment to think things through, not to blurt them out.
Mercury retrograde for each sign
Below is the house of your solar horoscope where Mercury retrograde falls. Its entire path, from 20°58′ back to 5°02′, lies in Scorpio, so for each sign it touches one area of life. If you know your rising sign, read that one too, as it is more precise. (If you are not sure what it is, start with Sun, Moon and rising sign.)
Aries: a conversation about shared money
8th house: shared money, debts, trust. A topic you thought was closed comes back: who owes whom, who puts how much into the shared pot. A good time to go through a joint budget honestly, and a bad time to sign a new loan without rereading the terms.
Taurus: your partner reopens something unfinished
7th house: partnership. Mercury moves opposite your sign, so the conversation is started by someone else: a partner in life or business brings up the thing you both agreed to deal with "some other time". Hear them out fully before you answer. If you were born roughly 25 April to 11 May, you will feel this more.
Gemini: double-check every message
6th house: work and routine. Mercury is your planet, so you notice its backward phase before anyone else: work emails, deadlines, schedules, applications. Check everything that leaves your desk. On the plus side, backlogs clear well, and old tasks finally get closed.
Cancer: an old feeling or idea wants words
5th house: love, children, creativity. Something you once started and dropped comes back: the novel in your drafts folder, a hobby, an old crush. You do not have to act on it. It is enough to be honest with yourself about what it means to you.
Leo: an unfinished family conversation
4th house: home and family. A conversation with your parents or the people you live with, one that was cut short at some point, comes back. Mars and Jupiter are in your sign right now, so on 30 October words at home may come out harsher than you mean them. Do not start those talks while you are upset.
Virgo: the message in your drafts finally gets sent
3rd house: messages, your close circle, siblings. Mercury is your planet too. What you have been carrying around in your head for months finally turns into a text. Reread it in the morning before you send it, and then send it.
Libra: recount everything before you sign anything about money
2nd house: money and self-worth. A billing error, a forgotten subscription, a refund that never arrived. Your own planet, Venus, is retrograde as well, so money is a double theme for you right now. Check amounts, account details and dates twice.
Scorpio: you put into words what you have long known
1st house: you. The retrograde runs through your own sign, which makes this the most personal version of the period. Thoughts that have sat "somewhere inside" for years finally get words. A good time to write down what you really think about yourself and your plans, and to hold off announcing it to everyone.
Sagittarius: the inner monologue needs an outlet
12th house: what stays out of sight. The conversation you have with yourself at night gets louder. Better to talk it through, with a journal, a therapist or someone close, than to wait for it to burst out at the worst possible moment.
Capricorn: an old contact is useful now
11th house: friends, communities, networks. Someone from an old team or a previous job may turn out to be exactly who you need right now. Message the person you have been thinking about all month. You will find a reason.
Aquarius: read that document twice
10th house: career and reputation. A report, a CV, an email to management, a public statement: anything tied to your name at work deserves a second read. A project or offer you once turned down may come back.
Pisces: the conversation about studying returns
9th house: study, travel, people far away. An unfinished course, an application you never sent, a trip you cancelled. A good time to return to it and decide whether you still want it. Check travel documents well in advance.
Who feels Mercury retrograde most
The backdrop is the same for everyone, but for some people these three weeks stand out more.
- People born roughly 28 October to 13 November. Your Sun sits right on the 5° to 21° Scorpio stretch that Mercury is moving back over. This period is personal for you. At the edges (28 to 29 October, 13 to 14 November) it depends on your birth year, so check your chart.
- People born roughly 3 to 5 November. Your Sun is close to 12°10′ Scorpio, where Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun on 4 November. Good days to understand something important about yourself.
- Geminis and Virgos. Mercury is their planet, so its backward phase shows up in almost everything.
- Taurus, Leo and Aquarius at the same degrees. If you were born roughly 25 April to 11 May, 28 July to 13 August, or 25 January to 9 February, your Sun is opposite or at a right angle to Mercury's path. It feels like friction: you want to finish the conversation, and it keeps hitting a wall.
- Anyone with natal Mercury in Scorpio. Your own way of thinking and speaking is what gets reviewed.
How to see Mercury retrograde in your own chart
Your Sun sign gives a rough picture; your natal chart gives the exact one. You will need your date, time and place of birth. If you have never read your chart, start with the guide how to read your natal chart.
Step 1. Which house holds 5° to 21° Scorpio
Find the stretch from 5° to 21° Scorpio in your chart and see which house it falls in. That is the area of life where old conversations and agreements return over these weeks.
Step 2. Do you have a planet at 5° to 21° Scorpio
If you do, the retrograde runs right over it, and Mercury will cross that point three times. Here is when:
- 5° to 9° Scorpio: forward 4 to 7 October, backward 7 to 13 November, forward again 14 to 20 November.
- 10° to 14°: forward 8 to 12 October, backward 3 to 6 November, forward again 21 to 25 November.
- 15° to 21°: forward 13 to 23 October, backward 25 October to 2 November, forward again 26 to 30 November.
Think back to what was happening on the first date. On the second, that topic is likely to return, and on the third, to close.
Step 3. Where is your natal Mercury
If your Mercury is in Scorpio, or this retrograde touches it, finding the right words takes longer, so do not rush yourself. If you were born with Mercury retrograde, this period often goes more smoothly: you are used to thinking first and speaking second. What retrograde planets mean in a birth chart is explained in retrograde planets in the natal chart.
What to do during Mercury retrograde
- Reread important messages twice before sending. Especially the ones written late in the evening.
- Finish the conversation you have been putting off. A simple "I've been meaning to tell you" is enough to start.
- Go back to old drafts, applications and projects. Right now it is easier to finish them than to start something new.
- Put agreements in writing: who does what, and by when.
- Back up your files and make sure your passwords and documents are within reach.
- Reply to people from your past who have got in touch, even briefly.
What to avoid
- Signing long-term contracts if the date can move to late November. If it cannot, read every clause and keep a copy.
- Buying tech and major electronics: you may want to rethink the decision after 13 November.
- Replying in the heat of the moment. Especially on 30 October.
- Launching big new projects from scratch. Plan them, yes. Launch them after 13 November.
- Blaming every glitch on Mercury retrograde. More often the cause is rushing, and that can be fixed.
Mercury retrograde 2026: the dates in one line
Mercury moves backwards from 24 October to 13 November 2026: it turns back at 20°58′ Scorpio and turns forward at 5°02′ Scorpio. The midpoint is 4 November, when Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun at 12°10′. The shadow runs from 4 October to 30 November, and Mercury leaves Scorpio on 6 December. For what else is happening in these weeks, see Scorpio season 2026 and the Sun–Venus conjunction on 24 October.
Frequently asked questions
When is Mercury retrograde in autumn 2026? From 24 October to 13 November 2026, entirely within Scorpio, from 20°58′ back to 5°02′. The shadow lasts from 4 October to 30 November, when Mercury crosses the same stretch going forward.
What should you not do during Mercury retrograde? Nothing is forbidden. Some things are simply better postponed: long-term contracts, buying tech, launching big new projects. If they cannot wait, reread, double-check and put everything in writing.
Why do some calendars say 20°58′ and others 20°59′? Mercury turns at 20°58′ and a few dozen seconds, right at the edge of the next minute, so some calendars round it up to 20°59′. It is the same point. For checking your own chart, the difference does not matter.
Can I sign a contract during Mercury retrograde? Yes, if you have read all of it and understand every clause. The retrograde does not make a contract bad; it makes carelessness and haste expensive. If the deadline can move to late November, it is better to move it.
Who is affected by Mercury retrograde the most? People born roughly 28 October to 13 November, Geminis and Virgos, and anyone with the Sun, Moon, rising sign or natal Mercury at 5° to 21° Scorpio.
Is Mercury retrograde bad? No. It is a time for revision, not loss. It is a poor fit for starting new things, and a good one for finishing old ones and finally saying what has been waiting to be said.
Which house holds 5° to 21° Scorpio in your chart, and which of your planets this retrograde touches, you can see in your natal chart in Eira. All you need is your date, time and place of birth.
