You open your laptop to send one email. Forty minutes later you are renaming files inside a folder called "Misc", building a better folder structure, and the email is still unsent.
Or this version: you walk into the kitchen for a glass of water and end up wiping down a fridge shelf you have not thought about since spring.
That is not laziness, and it is not quite procrastination either. It is a very specific state of mind: the whole picture is too big to hold, so your hands reach for the one piece you can actually put right in the next ten minutes. On 11 September 2026 the sky backs that impulse up: the Sun and the Moon meet at the same point, 18°25′ Virgo, and a new lunar cycle begins — one that opens with an inventory rather than a vision.
What actually shifts in these days
You suddenly see how much is unfinished. Not as "everything is a mess", but as a list: this is half-written, that got no reply, this one has been sitting there since July. It is uncomfortable, and it is useful. Most of the time that list exists only as a vague background weight. Right now it turns into items.
Small things irritate you more than big ones. Not the job — the file saved in the wrong folder. Not the relationship — the mug left on the table. If you catch yourself getting wound up over something trivial, your character has not deteriorated. Virgo has switched on a magnifying glass.
You want to repair your body. Book the appointment you have been circling for six months. Get your sleep back. Throw out whatever has been in the fridge since August. Virgo is the sign of maintaining the thing you live inside, and the body is the first item on its list.
You are tempted to rebuild everything from scratch. This is the trap of the week. A Virgo new moon does not give you the energy for a whole new life. It gives you attention to detail. People who use these days to promise themselves a new routine, a new job and a new personality starting Monday are usually back exactly where they started by Thursday, with one more reason to be annoyed at themselves.
There is one more difference that matters this particular month. The previous new moon, on 12 August, was a total solar eclipse at 20°02′ Leo — we looked at who it actually hit. An eclipse decides for you: circumstances move on their own, and your only real choice is how you respond. The new moon of 11 September is an ordinary one, with no eclipse attached. It takes nothing away and breaks nothing. It opens a window, and what you put through that window is your call. After a month when the choosing was not yours, the difference is easy to feel.
Why this new moon behaves the way it does
The mechanics are simple. A new moon is the moment the Sun and the Moon sit at the same degree. The Moon is invisible that day, and the cycle restarts from zero.
After that, the sign decides the flavour. Virgo does not hand you inspiration — Virgo hands you a list. Which is exactly why "I am going to change my life" fails here and "I am going to finish one thing" works remarkably well.
Two details make this new moon different from the Virgo new moon you remember from last year.
First, Mercury — the ruler of Virgo, the planet that sets the tone for the sign — moved into Libra the day before. The practical consequence is that your tidying keeps running into another person. You sit down to sort out your own affairs and discover that half of your loose ends are waiting on somebody else's answer, signature or agreement. That is not a glitch. It is a hint about where to start: with a conversation, not with a folder.
Second, Mars is moving through Cancer and supports this new moon with a sextile — the soft, helpful 60° angle. That angle becomes exact on 14 September. The useful conclusion: do not demand heroics from yourself on the 11th. The day of the new moon is for thinking and writing things down; the energy for doing arrives closer to mid-week. More on that background in our piece on Mars in Cancer.
Sign by sign: which house the new moon lands in
A house is the area of life an event touches. The houses below are counted from your Sun sign. If you know your rising sign — the sign that was coming up over the horizon at the moment you were born — count from that instead, because it is more accurate. Our guide to reading your natal chart shows you how to find it.
Aries
Sixth house: work, routine, health. The new moon lands exactly where you usually just put up with things — in the daily grind. A good moment to rebuild your schedule with less heroism in it: not more tasks, fewer.
Taurus
Fifth house: creativity, children, whatever you do for pleasure. The question of the week is why the thing you love turned into another obligation. Give it back one hour with no deliverable attached.
Gemini
Fourth house: home, family, roots. You will want to tidy literally — the wardrobe, the balcony, the flat. Underneath that there is usually something else: something to clear up with family. Start with the objects if that is easier, but do not stop there.
Cancer
Third house: communication, learning, the people closest at hand. Unfinished messages and unfinished conversations come back around. Short courses land well now — the kind you can finish in a month, not in a year.
Leo
Second house: money, possessions, your sense of your own worth. Time to look at the subscriptions that quietly leave your account every month and at the work you are being paid less for than it is worth. Not a rebellion — a calculation.
Virgo
First house: you. The new moon sits on your own sign, so this is a restart of the self — appearance, body, habits, the way you present yourself. One caveat: a restart in Virgo looks like one repaired detail, not a complete change of image.
Libra
Twelfth house: rest, the inner world, whatever is hidden. There is a lot to do and no energy for it, and that is normal. Your cycle this month starts later than everyone else's. The most useful thing now is to find what is draining you invisibly: lost sleep, an unspoken grievance, an obligation you stopped wanting a long time ago.
Scorpio
Eleventh house: friends, communities, plans. It becomes clear which connections run on habit and which run on genuine interest. A good moment to look honestly at the goal you have been carrying for a year and decide whether you are finishing it or dropping it.
Sagittarius
Tenth house: work, status, reputation. The new moon touches the visible part of your life. Tidy up whatever people judge you by: CV, portfolio, the way you describe what you do. Not because you are job hunting — because it should be accurate.
Capricorn
Ninth house: study, travel, your view of the world. The subject you keep filing under "when there is time" comes back: a language, a course, a postponed trip. Virgo does not ask for scale; it asks for one concrete step — book it, rather than decide it.
Aquarius
Eighth house: shared money, debt, deep change. Very practical days for dealing with whatever is shared with other people: loans, tax, obligations, old agreements about money. Unpleasant, yes — but right now it goes more calmly than usual.
Pisces
Seventh house: partnership and other people. The new moon sits opposite your sign, and the conversation you have been walking around becomes almost unavoidable. The good news is that in Virgo it stays practical rather than loud — as long as you open with a specific question and not with a complaint.
How to see it in your own chart
A new moon works by degree, not by sign. Three ways to check how much of it is really about you.
1. The degree. Look for planets between 15° and 21° of Virgo, Pisces, Gemini or Sagittarius. If you have one, the new moon lands on it or makes an exact angle to it, and the days around 11 September will be far more noticeable for you than for your neighbour.
2. Your birth date. The Sun crosses that degree zone roughly on 8–14 September, 6–12 March, 6–12 June and 7–13 December. If you were born inside one of those windows, this new moon sits on your Sun or makes an exact angle to it.
3. The house. Find which house of your chart contains 18°25′ Virgo. That is the area of life where a new round begins in September — and it may well differ from what is written above for your Sun sign. The house wins.
One more thing: the effect is stronger when the new moon touches your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars or Saturn. Those are the personal points of the chart, and contacts with them feel like "this is about me" rather than like weather. If you do not yet know what sits where, start with the big three — Sun, Moon and rising.
What to do and what to avoid
Worth doing: pick one task and finish it · write out the list of loose ends and cross off half of them as no longer relevant · book the medical appointment you keep postponing · bring back one ordinary daily habit that used to keep you steady · close something old instead of starting something new · ask a direct question of the person your loose end depends on.
Worth avoiding: promising yourself a brand new life from Monday · starting five things at once · expecting results from yourself on 11 September, when the energy builds closer to the 14th · running a performance review on your family under the banner of "getting organised" · being hard on yourself for how little got done. The list you noticed this week did not pile up in a week.
The dates
- 11 September 2026 — new moon at 18°25′ Virgo.
- 14 September — Mars in Cancer supports it, and the energy to act shows up.
- 26 September — full moon at 3°38′ Aries, showing what survived from the plan.
- 10 October — the next new moon, at 17°22′ Libra.
There are no eclipses until February 2027, so this cycle runs on a quiet background. For the wider picture of the month, see our September 2026 horoscope for all signs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the new moon on 11 September an eclipse?
No. An eclipse happens when the Sun and the Moon meet not only at the same degree but also on the same line vertically. On 11 September the Moon passes about 1°41′ off that line, which is enough for nothing to be covered. The next solar eclipse is on 6 February 2027.
What should I "set an intention" for?
A task, not a wish. "I want more order in my life" does nothing in Virgo. "I will sort the document drawer and start a folder for receipts" does a great deal. The smaller and more specific the item, the higher the chance it is actually closed by the full moon on 26 September.
How long does a new moon last?
The working window runs to the full moon on 26 September — half a lunar cycle, the stretch where whatever you started gains volume. The most noticeable days are 11–14 September. If you have planets between 15° and 21° of the mutable signs, add a couple of days on either side.
My Sun is in Virgo, but I do not feel anything special. Why?
Your Sun sign is roughly one twelfth of your chart. This new moon works hardest for people who have something sitting near 18°25′. If your Sun is at the start of Virgo, the event only grazes you; it will be far louder for anyone born between 8 and 14 September.
Can I start something new on a new moon?
You can, but match the scale to the sign. Virgo is about finishing, precision and maintenance, not about grand gestures. Launching something small and concrete is well supported here. Launching something large and vaguely defined will almost certainly become one more unclosed item.
What is the difference between a new moon and a full moon?
A new moon is a beginning: nothing is visible yet, but you still get to choose the direction. A full moon is a verdict: everything is visible, including what you would rather not see, and the choosing is already behind you. So you plan on a new moon and you draw a line under things on a full one.
Everything above is the general weather. Whether the new moon at 18°25′ Virgo falls in your tenth house or your twelfth, whether it sits on your Venus or passes you by entirely — that depends on your birth chart. Eira builds it from your date, time and place of birth and explains in plain language which part of this event is actually yours, and on which days.
